An Tóstal Returns to Salthill: A Celebration of Tradition, Community and Family Fun

SALTHILL, GALWAY — The Village Salthill and Galway Hooker Sailing Club are delighted to announce the return of An Tóstal, a vibrant celebration of Galway’s maritime heritage, taking place on the picturesque promenade of Salthill on the weekend of May 11th and 12th, 2024.

An Tóstal promises an exciting line-up of events and activities for all ages, showcasing the rich cultural tapestry of the region. On Saturday, May 11th, spectators will be treated to the thrilling sight of Galway Hooker racing, as majestic traditional sailing vessels navigate the waters off Salthill. This iconic display of skill and tradition is sure to captivate audiences and provide a unique glimpse into Galway’s seafaring past.

The festivities continue on Sunday, May 12th, with traditional rowing on Currach’s taking center stage. Spectators lining the promenade will witness teams of rowers compete in a spirited display of strength and teamwork, further highlighting the enduring legacy of maritime traditions in Galway.

Throughout the weekend, the event will be open to the public, inviting residents and visitors alike to join in the celebration of community spirit and heritage. The scenic promenade of Salthill will provide the perfect vantage point for spectators to take in the action and soak up the lively atmosphere.

In addition to the thrilling on-water activities, An Tóstal will offer plenty of entertainment and family fun on shore. Galway City Council is proud to support this event and will be hosting a Family Fun Day on Sunday, featuring a range of activities and attractions for children and adults alike. From live music and performances to interactive workshops and food stalls, there will be something for everyone to enjoy.

The re-establishment of Currach Racing in Salthill under the tag of An Tóstal will add another string to the bow of the resort as the family destination of choice in the West of Ireland. This year in 2024 the event will add Galway Hooker racing on the Saturday with The Currach Racing taking place on Sunday, where it will be part of the National Currach Racing League
