Mortons of Galway

Mortons of Galway is a family run grocery shop. Specialising in fresh foods, wines, delicatessen, and artisan produced foods.

Heritage and Ethos
Morton’s is a company with a long heritage of providing for customers in Dublin 6, where we have been based since 1934. It is also a company with its feet very much in the twenty-first century. While we continue to provide our customers with the personal touch and professional service that they need, we also know that requirements and tastes change as society does.

We are proud to stay true to our heritage, while also understanding how to meet the fluctuating demands of customers in today’s challenging, exciting culinary environment.

Team
At Morton’s, we believe that quality food and a personal service go hand in hand. We have assembled a team of highly-qualified food professionals, each of whom is an expert in their own field. We all share a passion for what we do, and we are here to help you with any issue you have.

Whether you need to source a particular ingredient for a dinner party, have special dietary needs, or just prefer to shop in a business where quality goes without saying, our team is ready to welcome you to Morton’s!

Our History
Our story began in 1934, when “Morton’s Fish and Veg Shop” was founded on Dunville Avenue in Ranelagh by husband and wife Charles and Esther Morton. Charles would bicycle to the Smithfield Fish Market to source his fresh seafood, which was delivered to the shop by horse and cart.

In 1953 Charles and Esther’s son Albert and his wife Iris, opened a grocery store on the corner of Dunville Avenue and Moyne Road, where our flagship store remains today. In the 1960s, Albert, by now joined by his brother Charles Jr., combined their shop with that of their parents to form C. Morton & Sons.

In 1985 we expanded the store and added an in-house kitchen for making home cooked prepared meals in addition to selling groceries. Further expansion in 2007 led to the kitchen being relocated above the store. Now at Morton’s in Dunville Avenue, you’ll find fresh vegetables and fruits from the market, meat from our craft butcher, fresh fish supplied daily, a Sheridan’s cheese counter with Irish and international artisan cheeses, high-end charcuterie, and all of those “difficult to find” ingredients under the one roof. Our ready-to-eat meals from Morton’s Kitchen include soups, salads, dinners, desserts, and cakes, with plenty more available in our deli. We take our wine seriously too, so you’ll find plenty of interesting bottles as well as some more familiar names. And to add to the friendly neighbourhood vibe, we have Cafe21 where we serve our home baked cakes and great coffee.

In 2008, we opened a second store, in the impressive stone vaults of the old Harcourt Street Railway Station, at Hatch Street in the heart of bustling central Dublin. Here, it’s more about breakfast and lunch for the working professionals in the area. With everything freshly prepared in Morton’s Kitchen daily, we’ve earned a reputation for great food, and to offer even more choice, we have a Diep Noodle and Oishii Sushi counter in-store. We use Bell Lane coffee which is roasted by Stephen Bell in Mullingar, and serve it the way you like it… no fuss, no pretentious names, just great coffee.

2014 saw us celebrate 80 years as a successful family business. The horses and carts may be long gone, but we like to think that Charles and Esther would still appreciate the high quality and range of our foods, and the warm, friendly greeting you’ll receive from our staff.
